How to check doors and windows after an AI floor plan conversion

Missing doors or windows can come from source ambiguity, reconstruction errors, or hidden geometry. Five checks separate those causes and explain what you can correct.
Check the openings against the original plan before furnishing: a missing doorway changes how rooms connect, and a misplaced window changes where furniture can go. Possible causes include an unclear symbol, a coarse scan, a reconstruction error despite a legible source, or a viewer setting that hides geometry. Work through the five checks below and label each finding as a confirmed model error, an unknown in the source, or a display-only issue.
Step 1: establish the scale before you judge anything
Pick a clearly marked length on the source, compare it with the same length in the result, then check a second dimension somewhere else on the plan. One matching measurement does not show that the whole layout holds its proportions; two that disagree require you to check scale, source distortion, and local geometry rather than assuming a single cause. You can still record whether a door is present while keeping its dimensions unverified. If the original states no trustworthy dimension anywhere, separate relative placement from real size: a doorway can sit in the right wall at the right distance from the corner while its actual width stays unknown. A conversion cannot recover a measurement the source never established, which is why RoomSketcher’s AI Convert asks you to set a known length by hand and Planner 5D’s upload guidance asks for a dimensioned plan. Step 2: follow the walls room by room
Start at the main entrance and walk one consistent route through the whole plan, source and result side by side, with a top-down view available in both. For each room, compare four things.
- The number of doors and the number of windows.
- The wall each opening sits in.
- Its position relative to the nearest corner.
- The space on the other side of it.
Counting is useful and is not sufficient. A model with the right number of doors can still connect the wrong rooms, which is the error that quietly ruins a furniture plan later. Give extra attention to short corridors, closets, bathroom entrances and openings close to a wall junction, because those are where a symbol has the least room to be legible. For windows, run a second pass around the outside perimeter. Going around the envelope catches the window that the room-by-room walk skipped.
Step 3: separate an opening from its symbol
Inspect an uncertain doorway from both sides. Two separate questions are hiding in one glance: does the wall carry the opening the source shows, and does a door object sit inside that opening? A door-shaped object is not evidence that the wall behind it is cut, and a bare gap in a wall is not evidence that the source drew a cased opening rather than a door. Before you record anything as an error, check the viewer settings, because a cutaway view hides walls by design, some camera positions clip geometry that is genuinely there, and a tall piece of furniture placed in front of an opening hides it completely. Those are display choices, and the list you are building should say so.
Step 4: check the details that change your layout
Where the source makes them clear, compare door width and swing direction, and treat sliding doors and open passages as their own case rather than as hinged doors drawn loosely. An inward swing decides whether a desk, a chest of drawers or a full-height cabinet can stand beside the door at all. For windows, separate what the plan states from what it leaves silent: a floor plan routinely establishes a window’s position and width while saying nothing about its sill height, and a sill height is what decides whether a sofa back or a worktop can pass under it. Record an unstated sill height as unknown rather than reading the height the model happens to show. The same applies to any opening that was ambiguous in a low-resolution scan. A confident-looking 3D result does not resolve an unclear source symbol.
Worth checkingDoor swings and clearances are the details worth measuring on site rather than in a model. What furniture passes through is the clear opening, not the leaf: the US Access Board’s chapter on accessible routes defines it as the width between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90 degrees, and sets 32 in (815 mm) minimum for the buildings the ADA covers. That rule does not govern a private home, and the measuring method is still the right one. Nothing in the model checks a swing against the furniture beside it.
Step 5: recheck the version you will actually use
After any correction, repeat the short room-by-room pass, and repeat it again on an exported file if a download is your next working copy. A correct editor view does not by itself show that the file you downloaded carries the same geometry, and the check costs a few minutes against a handoff you might otherwise send twice. Keep the running list in three columns: confirmed errors, uncertain details in the source, and display-only issues. That separation is the useful part, because it tells you which items need a better drawing and which need a phone call to whoever owns the building.

How do you fix a missing door or window?
Be clear about what is editable. That is a deliberate trade, because a structure you can nudge is a structure whose relationship to the source drawing quietly stops being true. What an AI editor can and cannot change sets out where that line falls.
There is no in-app structural correction for a wrong opening. If you identify a defect in the source, the changes below may help a new import. If the source is already legible, record the discrepancy and do not assume another import will repair it. Keep that area out of fit or clearance decisions until you have a trustworthy reference.
- The right page, exported on its own, rather than a permit set whose first page is a site plan.
- A higher resolution scan of the same sheet. Openings are small marks, and they are the first detail a coarse scan loses.
- A file focused on the relevant plan, without unrelated diagrams but with the room boundaries, dimensions, and necessary notes intact.
- Reference measurements in the context form: a name and a known length in meters, up to 30 of them. These provide scale evidence, not a guarantee; check the reported status and a second independent dimension afterward.
- Other verifiable drawing context: original units, scale denominator as 1:n, ceiling height, and room areas. Original page numbers describe the source set; they do not select the page for a single-floor upload.
A new import spends an import from your allowance, so identify what new evidence the next run would receive before spending another import. A repeat run does not guarantee a repair, even with a clearer file. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.
