AI floor plan editor: what it can and cannot change
Conceptual model only. Not a survey or construction document.
INK TO BRICK supports saved directions and manual furniture and finish editing, not wall changes. New AI furnishing directions and refinement are unavailable.
NoteUse the reconstruction as a conceptual model, not a survey or construction document. Verify dimensions on site before ordering or building.
An AI floor plan editor changes what sits inside the rooms: furniture, the arrangement of that furniture, finishes, materials and lighting. It does not decide that a wall can move. In INK TO BRICK the reconstructed structure is protected, so walls and openings are not editable, and a reconstruction can misread even a legible drawing. A better source can help when it contains a specific problem, but another import does not guarantee a correction. This page is for someone deciding what to ask an AI editor for, and what still belongs in a drawing.
Two different things are called an AI floor plan editor
The first family generates images. You upload a plan, describe a change, and a model draws a new plan or a new room from scratch. What comes back is a PNG or a PDF page. Some products keep that image linked to its source; others do not. The image alone cannot provide editable room geometry or verify dimensions. The second family edits a structured model with rooms, walls, openings, furniture and finish assignments. Ask whether a change updates that model, produces a separate image, or does both. Then inspect the result against the source. Floor plan to 3D describes what the second kind is built from.
- Ask for one specific change, then compare the result with the source. Check whether nearby furniture, openings and finishes stayed as intended.
- Look for a measurement tool and a scale status. A number and a unit are useful only when you can check the model’s scale against a known dimension.
- Change one surface and look at its neighbor. A new kitchen floor should stop at the kitchen. If the cabinets, the window, and the daylight changed too, you were handed a new image.
- Read the undo label. A model editor can name what it undid: change finish, move fixture, remove fixture. An image tool can only step back to a previous image.
Why will an AI editor not move a wall?
Take the study plan above, a 39 by 26 ft (12 by 8 m) house with a living and kitchen space, a bedroom, a workroom, and an entry. A language model is good at the part of this job that is about names. It can read your sentence, match it to things that already carry names in the scene, search a furniture catalog, describe what is in a room, and compare one saved revision with another. Those are lookups over structured data, and a sentence is a reasonable way to ask for them. Nothing about the building changes if the answer comes back wrong. Moving the wall between the bedroom and the workroom is a different kind of decision. That wall bounds two rooms, so it sets the area of both. It may carry a door whose head height was drawn for a reason. It may be holding up what sits above it. None of that is in the sentence you typed, and most of it is not in the drawing either, because a sales brochure plan or a drawing out of a filing cabinet rarely marks which walls are structural. A tool may let you sketch that alteration, but the ability to edit geometry does not establish whether the change can be built. Have the existing conditions and proposed work checked before relying on them. We wrote separately about what a model built from a drawing actually knows.
What INK TO BRICK can and cannot change
Furniture, finishes, and materials are editable. Walls and openings are not: changes live in a saved design option on top of locked existing conditions. If the model gets a wall wrong, compare that location with the source before deciding what to change. For a single-floor upload, extract the required sheet as a one-page PDF. A cleaner scan or better drawing context can help when information is missing, but a legible source can still be reconstructed incorrectly. Do not plan around a known geometry error or assume another import will repair it. Use checking doors and windows against the plan to distinguish a reconstruction error from missing or ambiguous source information.
New AI furnishing directions and their refinement are not currently available. Existing saved directions remain useful starting points, and you can place furniture and change finishes manually in a saved design option. This is separate from generating a photoreal image from the current 3D view, which remains available to members with editing access. Revision history and side-by-side comparison are available on Creator, Project Pass, Studio, and Business. Export access depends on the format: basic formats and images start on Plus; DXF, DWG, SKP, and export controls require Creator, Project Pass, Studio, or Business; IFC and STEP require Business. Free does not include the export library. Check pricing.
What can you ask the panel for?
Open Ask for changes from a design option. The assistant uses Google Gemini to answer questions about the open design and to prepare furniture or finish changes for review. A proposed edit appears in a preview card: choose Apply change to accept it or Discard to leave the option as it is. These are the furniture and finish choices used to develop an interior design proposal. These examples show what to ask and what happens next.
| What you ask | What the panel does |
|---|---|
| Find a vanity for the bathroom. | Searches the furniture catalog and answers in the transcript with candidate pieces. Placing one is a separate preview you apply. |
| What fixtures are in the kitchen? | Reads the scene and lists what is in that room. Nothing changes. |
| Preview a different kitchen floor finish. | Prepares a preview card. The finish reaches the design option when you press Apply change, and not before. |
| What changed since the previous version? | Compares two revisions of the design option and reports the fields that differ, on Creator and above. |
| Move the wall between the kitchen and the living room. | Declines the structural change. The editor and the assistant keep the reconstructed walls, doors, windows and room geometry locked. |
Worth checkingThe panel reminds you: “Chat does not apply changes. Review a preview, then confirm it.” Preview cards also show when they expire. If a preview has expired, request a fresh one before applying the change.
The four commands that can change a design option
Everything the app can change inside a design option goes through four commands, whether a person or an applied preview asks for them. None of the four touches a wall.
- Assign a finish to a room floor, a wall surface, a ceiling, or a fixture.
- Place a piece from the furniture catalog.
- Change a fixture that is already there, including its position and rotation.
- Remove a fixture.
Furniture placement, finish changes and the measure tool work through the editor controls, and the editor’s Units control offers Metric or Feet and inches. For reference, 1 m is about 3 ft 3 in. The assistant can find a piece, describe a room and show you a change before you accept it. The rest is yours, starting with two questions no editor can answer from a drawing: whether the plan still matches the building as it stands today, and whether the change you like is buildable. Once the answer involves a wall, door, window or level, the change belongs in the drawing, and a changed drawing is a new floor plan to import. Our renovation planning page sets out what a model built from a plan gives you before that conversation, and what it does not.
