Floor plan to SketchUp: start from a 3D model instead of tracing

Conceptual model only. Not a survey or construction document.

Export an SKP, DAE or GLB and open your floor plan as a model in SketchUp instead of tracing it. What each subscription reads, and what to check.

You do not have to trace a floor plan in SketchUp. Convert the plan into a 3D model first, then export the file your SketchUp subscription reads: an SKP, which is SketchUp’s own format and opens with File > Open, or a Collada DAE or GLB, which come in through File > Import. Tracing is still the right move when all you want is a 2D underlay, and for that a DWG or DXF beats any mesh. This page is for anyone who has a plan of an existing space and wants walls and rooms to arrive already standing.

Which file should you export for your SketchUp subscription?

Trimble publishes one table that answers this, and it is worth reading before you export anything: Using SketchUp with Other Applications lists each file extension against the subscriptions that can use it. The column below repeats what that page says, next to the plan you need on this side to produce the file.

Two gaps in that table are worth stating plainly. Trimble does not publish a subscription-by-subscription import matrix for the browser app: the SketchUp for Web help page lists the formats the web app imports, 3DS, DAE, DEM, DWG, DXF, KMZ, STL, JPG and PNG, then notes that some of what the page describes needs a Go, Pro or Studio subscription, without saying which parts. And the CAD page states only that subscribers can import CAD files. So check the Import dialog in your own account before you build a schedule around a file. What is certain is the direction of travel: the more capable the subscription, the more of this list you can open.

What arrives in SketchUp, and what does not?

Geometry and materials arrive. The reconstruction is rooms, walls and openings, with the fixtures and furniture placed in the editor, so what lands in SketchUp is a set of faces and edges standing at the right heights, not a parametric building. There is no wall assembly, no framing and nothing behind the surfaces. Trimble’s help says an imported CAD file becomes a component, and that SketchUp groups imported CAD geometry for you when your model already contains grouped geometry. Whichever way yours lands, get it into a single group early: that is what lets you move the whole reference onto its own tag and off your working geometry.

What does not arrive is a drawing. A mesh import gives you no dimension strings, no text and no title block, because those are things a sheet carries and a model does not. Trimble’s own CAD page is explicit that SketchUp does not support dimensions or text on the way in, even from a DWG. If the deliverable is a marked-up plan, that is a drawing job, not a modeling job.

What should you check after the import?

  • Scale, against a dimension you already know. Trimble lists this first among the known issues after a CAD import, and the same warning holds for a mesh: draw the tape tool along one long wall and compare it with the number printed on the plan. An overall run of 39 ft 4 in (12 m) should read as 39 ft 4 in (12 m).
  • The origin. GLB imports keep the drawing origin by default, so a model built far from its own zero point arrives far from yours. Move it near the origin before you start modeling; distant geometry is a documented cause of performance trouble in SketchUp.
  • Alignment to the axes. Trimble’s post-import checklist says to line the floor plan up with SketchUp’s drawing axes, and everything you infer later, inference points, push and pull directions, section planes, depends on that being true.
  • Doubled faces. Two-sided export is a real option in Trimble’s own COLLADA exporter and it doubles the polygon count. If an imported model feels heavy or flickers where two surfaces meet, count faces before you blame the machine.
  • Tags and groups. Give the imported geometry its own tag, purge the tags that came in empty, and keep it as a single group so you can hide the whole reference in one click.

When is DWG or DXF the better file?

When you want to draw the building yourself. A DWG or DXF arrives as lines on the ground plane, which is the classic SketchUp start: import the plan, lock it on its own tag, and trace walls up from it with the rectangle and push and pull tools. The CAD import options exist for exactly this, including Import Linework Flattened, which sets the Z value of everything to zero so a plan that was drawn with stray elevations still lies flat. Choose it when the geometry is going to be redrawn anyway, when you want SketchUp faces built the way you build them, or when the model has to stay light. What INK TO BRICK does here

INK TO BRICK converts an uploaded floorplan (PDF, PNG, JPEG, SVG, or DXF, up to 25 MiB) into a conceptual 3D model, and the export library writes the SketchUp file from it. SKP and DWG need Creator and above, DXF needs Creator and above, and Collada DAE, GLB, glTF and OBJ are included on Plus and above. The Free plan does not include the export library. The project creator or an assigned customer Editor with an available seat can use it, and only while the project is nonpublic.

A 3D export names its source: the canonical model with your edits, the original model when available, or a saved presentation build if you want the file to match images a client has already seen. Plan exports are separate and carry their own controls: layer selection across rooms, walls, openings, fixtures, labels and dimensions, paper A4, A3 or Letter, and a scale from 1:10 to 1:1000. Buildings of 2 to 20 floors are a Business feature.
