Will a queen bed fit? Measure the frame, clearances and delivery route

A queen mattress is 60 by 80 in (152 by 203 cm), the one fixed number in this problem. Add a frame, which usually runs a few inches past the mattress on each side, plus one 36 in (915 mm) walking strip, and a queen bed works out at roughly 8 ft 6 in by 7 ft (2.6 by 2.15 m) of floor. Whether that fits your room comes down to three numbers the drawing has to give up: the clear wall run for the headboard, the walking space on each side you use, and the narrowest point on the delivery route. If you can stand in the room, take a tape and go measure it. This page is for the other case, where the room exists only as a drawing, because the apartment is still being built or a plan arrived from a seller and the keys did not.

How big is a queen bed, and what does the frame add?

In the United States the size sold as a queen is 60 by 80 in (152 by 203 cm) and a king is 76 by 80 in (193 by 203 cm), the figures Casper prints in its mattress sizes and bed dimensions guide beside the rest of the US chart. Those are mattresses and nothing else. A frame is wider and longer than the mattress it holds, by an amount that depends on its rails, its headboard and its surround, so take the frame’s outside width and length off its own product listing rather than adding a guess to the mattress. Queen is also not one standard worldwide. A bed sold under that name in another market can be a different width and a different length, which matters if you are buying in one country and shipping to another, so read the inches and the centimeters rather than the name.

The last three are the ones a drawing has to answer when you cannot walk the room, and they are the only part of this a scaled model changes: it lets you take the same distances inside the plan. All three assume the drawing carries a scale. If yours prints no dimension strings anywhere, that is the first problem to solve, and getting a scale out of the file comes before any of this. How much floor should you leave around the bed?

Check the space around the bed as well as its footprint. If you want a published figure to hold that against rather than a rule of thumb, the US Access Board’s chapter on accessible routes in the ADA standards sets a walking surface at 36 in (915 mm) minimum clear width, narrowing to 32 in (815 mm) for no more than 24 in (610 mm) of length. That rule governs accessible routes in the buildings the ADA covers, not a bedroom in a private home, and nobody is going to enforce it beside your bed. It is still a number somebody published, and you can calibrate it against the gap you already live with by running a tape along the side of your current bed. Then decide which sides you actually use. A bed pushed into a corner needs one strip and a way to change the sheets. A bed two people get out of needs two. A closet door or a dresser drawer needs its own swing or pull, and that distance is measured from the face of the furniture, not from the wall behind it.

Will it get through the door, the hallway and the elevator?

The doorway is a separate number, and it is not the door. A plan draws a door as a leaf and an arc; what a dresser passes through is the clear opening, which is narrower than the leaf. The same Access Board chapter defines how to take it: a door opening provides a clear width of 32 in (815 mm) minimum, measured between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90 degrees. Measure yours the same way, standing at the open door, from the door face across to the stop. Reading those openings off a plan is its own short job, and checking doors and windows on a plan walks through it.

A mattress bends and a bed frame usually comes apart, so the bedroom door rarely stops a bed. What stops a delivery is the route: the turn out of a hallway, a stairwell landing with a low ceiling over it, a front door that opens against a coat closet, and in an apartment building the elevator. Ask the building manager for the elevator cab depth and door width, for whether the freight elevator has to be reserved, and for the move-in hours, then ask the delivery company what it will do if the piece has to go up the stairs. Walk the whole route and write down the narrowest point, not the door you were already worried about.

Each piece in the library lists its dimensions as width by depth by height, with its room roles, its catalog version and its license, and a piece that needs space around it carries a Clearance required badge and states what it needs. The library is also plain about what its footprint drawings are: per-piece scale, catalog bounds, not a product image. So a library piece is a stand-in of about the right size, not a copy of the bed you are buying. Keep the real frame’s listing open next to it. Worth checkingThe model does not check any of this for you. Nothing compares a piece’s required clearance against the space around it, analyzes circulation, or warns you that a route is too narrow. Use the measure tool to check a doorway or wall run. The workspace reports modeled area and dimensions, but those numbers do not establish the real room size when scale is unresolved. A known dimension helps interpret scale; it does not calibrate every room by itself.
