3D print a house model from a floor plan: STL and 3MF exports
Conceptual model only. Not a survey or construction document.
Export STL or 3MF on Plus and above, scale the model to 1:100 or 1:50, check wall thickness against your nozzle, and print the house on a desktop printer.
To 3D print a house model from a floor plan, upload the plan to INK TO BRICK, export the reconstructed model as STL or 3MF, which are on Plus and above, open the file in a slicer, scale it to a printable size, and print. A 1:100 model of a 40 by 60 ft (12.2 by 18.3 m) house lands at about 4.8 by 7.2 in (12.2 by 18.3 cm), which fits a 220 by 220 mm bed without splitting. This page is for anyone who wants the plan as an object on a table: students, sales offices, and people making a gift out of a house somebody loves.
Should you print the STL or the 3MF?
Export 3MF if your slicer is happy with it, and keep the STL as the file you send to somebody whose software you do not know. The difference that bites people is units.

The vendors publish their own lists, and those are the ones to trust for the version you run: PrusaSlicer supported file formats, the Bambu Studio quick start, which names .3mf, .stl, .stp, .step, .amf and .obj, and UltiMaker’s list of file types Cura opens.
What scale should you print a house model at?
Two scales cover almost every reason to print a home: 1:100 when the whole house has to fit on one bed, and 1:50 when someone needs to see inside the rooms. Do the arithmetic before you slice, because scale decides both the footprint and whether the walls are printable at all.
- At 1:100, a 40 by 60 ft (12.2 by 18.3 m) house prints at about 4.8 by 7.2 in (12.2 by 18.3 cm), and an 8 ft (2.44 m) story stands about 1 in (24 mm) tall.
- At 1:50, the same house is about 9.6 by 14.4 in (24.4 by 36.6 cm), which needs a large-format bed or a model split into parts you glue.
- Exterior walls follow the same division. A 6 in (150 mm) wall is 1.5 mm at 1:100 and 3 mm at 1:50. An interior partition of 4 in (100 mm) is 1 mm at 1:100, which a 0.4 mm nozzle prints as two lines and no infill.
What should you check before slicing?
- The mesh closes. A reconstruction can leave a wall that does not quite meet a floor, and a slicer will either flag the mesh as non-manifold or quietly fill something you did not intend. Read the warnings your slicer prints instead of clicking past them, and use its own repair step if it offers one.
- Wall thickness against your nozzle. Anything thinner than about two extrusion widths, roughly 0.8 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle, is a gamble. If the partitions come out too thin at 1:100, print at 1:50 rather than fighting the slicer.
- The openings. A 3 ft (0.9 m) door at 1:100 is a 9 mm gap with a head to bridge across, which most printers manage. Wide openings over an open plan are the ones to look at twice.
- The floors. Multi-floor buildings, 2 to 20 floors, are a Business feature. If your project has them, decide whether you are printing the stack as one solid or each floor as its own part so people can lift the top off and look in.
- The furniture. STL and 3MF export the geometry in the selected source revision; hiding furniture in the viewer does not filter these mesh exports. For a massing model, remove unwanted objects in a downstream mesh editor and save a separate printable copy, leaving the project and original export intact. Recheck the resulting mesh before slicing.
How should you orient and support the print?
Print it the way the building stands: floor plate flat on the bed, walls rising vertically. That orientation needs the fewest supports and keeps the plan geometry, the part people will actually look at, off the support interface. Door and window heads become short bridges, and short bridges usually print clean; add supports only for the openings your slicer preview shows sagging. A brim earns its place here, because a house model is a lot of thin vertical wall standing on a small footprint.
For a two-story house, printing each floor as its own part and stacking them is worth the extra setup: the interiors stay visible, the walls stay short, and a client can pick up one floor at a time. If you want the parts to seat the same way every time, add locating pins in a mesh editor before you slice.
Who prints a house model, and why?
Students print them because a physical massing model answers questions a screen does not, and because a plan they drew becomes a thing they can hand across a desk at a review. Sales offices print them because a buyer standing over a model asks better questions than a buyer holding a brochure, which is the job housing development sales describes. Exhibitors print them for the same reason a stand needs something on the counter, covered in exhibition booth. And people print the house they grew up in, from the only plan the family still has.
